Down and Dirty: Cleaning Your Bathroom

By Meagan Kelly for REALTOR.ca

Cleaning the bathroom. Someone has to do it, but no one wants to do it. It might be hard to work up the excitement to scrub the shower walls and clean the toilet, but taking care of your bathroom doesn’t have to be difficult! If you stick to a schedule and clean efficiently, you may end up being surprised at how quickly the process can go. You know the saying—work smarter, not harder.

We chatted with Madison McCausland again, owner of Mads Manic Cleaning Co., who shared some of her tips on how you can clean your bathroom properly, plus some tricks on how to deal with tougher messes.

How often should you be cleaning your bathroom?

You shouldn’t be waiting until the grime is built up to give your bathroom a good wash down. According to McCausland, you’ll want to work on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule.

“I personally give my bathroom a quick clean and wipe down every day if I can, just to keep it sparkly,” she shared. “Giving your bathroom a deep clean is completely dependent on how often it’s getting used. High-traffic bathrooms always need a little more love and attention. Generally every week or two does the trick!”

What area should you focus on the most?

Admittedly, not everyone will stick to a weekly cleaning schedule. But if you’re not doing a full scrub every week, you should at least be focusing on one key area in the bathroom.

“Always, always, always focus on the toilet first!” McCausland stressed. “The most build up comes from neglecting your toilet, so you want to negate any unpleasant odours! We frequently use either Scrubbing Bubbles or Lysol bathroom foam. A fresh-smelling toilet will be sure to cheer up your bathroom.”

How should you deal with built-up grime in the shower?

The built-up grime on shower tiles is inevitable, no matter how frequently you clean. It can be defeating to spend time scrubbing the walls, only for the grime to start forming again days later. While preventing build-up completely isn’t really an option (unless you just don’t use the shower), there are a couple of products McCausland finds the most helpful.

“Grime and build-up happen over time, they’re things we can’t avoid,” McCausland admitted. “For mould and mildew, I usually suggest Lysol bathroom bleach or CLR Mould and Mildew stain remover.* ”

And, for those of us with glass shower walls, we know the pain of trying to keep them clean. McCausland suggested there’s a way to help prevent the glass from getting too gross, and a simple mixture to help clean it when it does.

“Cleaning glass shower doors is always a pain,” she said. “They’re beautiful but water stains take time to remove. Use a squeegee after every shower if you can! I use a nice mix of Dawn dish soap and vinegar along with a damp cloth. It does the trick when the build up happens.”

What’s the best way to clean your shower head?

Yes, that’s right. Your shower head! Think about it—if you’re cleaning yourself with water, and the place the water’s coming from isn’t clean, then there might be a bit of a problem. It can be an awkward part of the shower to reach, especially if height isn’t one of your many gifts, but McCausland has a sure-fire way to help get that shower head clean.

“Shower heads are easy peasy lemon squeezy,” she jokes. “Use a plastic bag filled with equal parts vinegar and distilled water. Tie it around the shower head, let it sit, and relax while it works for you! When you remove the bag, scrub the shower head and watch the residue slide off.”

Are there areas that collect more dirt and grime than others?

Your bathroom is going to inherently collect dirt. That’s the name of the game. But, some spots tend to attract dirt more than others, and those are the ones you should focus on when cleaning.

“Any area where there’s caulking is where grime builds up over time,” McCausland explained. “Also behind the toilet, especially if you have young kids at home who don’t have great aim. Most people also forget that upper ridge in the top of the toilet bowl. I’ve seen some gross ones!”

Cleaning the bathroom is a chore—literally—and it tends to get pushed to the end of our “to-do” lists. But, if you keep up with a regular schedule and follow these tips, you might find it’s not as bad as you originally thought!
